The year end is knocking on our doors. We are preparing the last fabulous party-outfit of the decade and talking about the years that have gone by. When it comes to this decade’s fashion, it has been fun, bold, sexy, ugly, pretty, chic, retrospective, modern…
It’s not as easy to pin down the 00′s like it is to do with the 60s, 70s, 80s and even 90s. We’ve worn UGGs, trucker-hats, velour suits, (VERY!) low-cut jeans, high-waist jeans, leggings and jeggings, skinny jeans, Ray-Ban sunglasses… We were inspired by the past decades and ugly from the 80s and 90s all of a sudden became the pretty of the 00′s!
Trends of 2010
What trends we’ll be seeing in the next decade no one can tell for sure, but we do have an idea of what we’ll be seeing in 2010!
Double Denim (One that I will boycott!)
D&G is approving of this 80s trend that has been criticized by many fashionistas for so many years and showing lots of it in their Summer 2010 collection. Looks like the so called red-neck style is going to be one of the hottest trends in 2010. So how do you get the right denim look?
- Like D&G; pair the same colours of denim together
- Choose light denim over dark denim
- Denim dresses are a hit
Minimalism
We’ll be seeing a lot of minimalistic outfits; sharp silhouettes, no-frills tailoring, shift dresses. This look is very feminine, elegant and sophisticated and at the same time very sexy. Tips for the minimalists:
- A-line dresses and skirts
- Great fabrics like leather and silk will give you a refined minimalistic look
- Keep it minimalistic – don’t over-accessorize
- Keep the make-up and hair minimalistic too
Colours of 2010
We’ll be seeing a lot of white and blue in 2010. Nude colours, terracotta and putty tones will dominate the summer. Now all you need to do is to find your best colours!
- Mix these colours together
- Use accessories in these colours as well to enhance your look
Flowers
Flowers in the spring (as usual). But this time they are more refined, simple and not too messy. We’ll see some big flowers and some more graphic looking flowers in different bright colours. Here’s Chanel’s choice of flower:
Patch ‘Em Up
In ’09 we wore ripped jeans, and now we can patch them up to be trendy in ’10! Patched jeans will become trendy in 2010. Tip:
- DIY – Sit down and be creative, it’s easy to patch things up
- Don’t over-accessorize with these jeans, as they are a statement as they are
But Don’t Patch Too Much – Ripped Jeans Yet Again!
Ripped jeans are also fashionable in 2010. This trend became hot in 2009 and looks like it’s going to be even hotter next year. Good thing we are ready to wear them!
Leather, Pleather and more of it
In 2009 we saw a hot trend in biker leather jackets and in 2010 leather will take on many different shapes; skirts, pants, blouses, capes. Tips for wearing this trend:
- Wear it in grey, black or an earthy color
- Leather is not only for shoes, pants, jackets and gloves
- Choose pleather over leather if possible
Patterned Pants
Stripes, florals, abstract and graphic prints, prints of cats, birds, dogs (Miu Miu), strawberries (Tao), dinosaurs (Giles) just to name a few. Nearly everything goes when it comes to prints in 2010. This goes for leggings and jeggings too. How do we wear these?
- Pair printed pants with a minimalistic tunic or blouse
- Do not use too many accessories with these
- Let the pants be the center of the outfit
- Pair them up with classic items like blazers
Lingerie as outerwear
Get ready to see some sexy clothing in sheer and see-through fabrics like Marc Jacob’s corseted bra tops. But worry not! The trend is not only about tight sheer dresses, it’s about layers and feminine draping as well.
- Mix conservative items with underwear inspired details
Dark Age Warrior
Military trend that we’ve already seen this year will evolve in 2010 into a futuristic dark age warrior look. The characteristics of this trend are:
- Metallic plating
- Leather
- Details inspired by chains
- Tribal motives
- Studs and spikes
Ruffles
Even though many designers are trying to get us to be minimalistic in 2010, ruffles are still going to be a hot trend. This year we’ve seen lots of it and we’re not going to miss it next year either.
What do you think?
Will you be wearing any of these trends? I personally think were of to a good start! (Except the double-denim trend!)

this is a nice post! good preview of what fashion in 2010 will be.
Thank you!
I’ve seen designers try to get pattern pants to take off over and over — it just never happens. All the rest, especially the ruffles, will be huge.
I agree, Susan… But I do think they might succeed this time. In ’09 we saw the start of patterned leggings, so maybe we are ready to wear patterned pants in the next decade! We’ll see.
I’m definitely getting prepared for next year now. I’m not a huge fan of double denim, but I can’t wait to try out the minimalist trend,a nd definitely loving how ripped jeans are still in.
I thought ripped jeans would go away, but glad they’re still in
I’m not a huge fan of double denim either – maybe I’ll change my mind later, but I doubt it!
Good Post Milana!!! I’m super excited to see what fashion will be like in the next couple of years. It for sure looks like the oldies are coming back into style!
So I’m not a big fan of the patterned pants; I don’t think I will be joining in on that one. Ha. But I for sure love to try new things and while the double denim doesn’t look as appealing to some, I can already picture me in that style with my ostrich cowgirl boots.
I just love dressing up! From elegant, girly, sporty, cowgirlish, etc.
Even when ripped jeans go out of style I don’t think I could ever leave them because they are my favorite.
Thanks so much, Grace! I am very excited about the new trends – it all looks very interesting and somewhat daring! And I agree, even when something goes out of style, if you love it, wear it whether it’s ‘in’ or ‘out’!
Love love everything except for the denim on denim, I am not sure on how to wear that but if its just a simple denim dress and yes, its a do!
My fave is the lingerie as an outerwear!
I agree, Anne. The denim on denim is a tough one – I’m looking forward to seeing what people come up with in this trend! The lingerie-outerwear trend is really cool if done correctly!
why would you choose pleather over leather?
leather is high-quality, with a better overall look and longer lasting.
Thanks for your comment, Daisy. A lot of vegetarians, vegans and animal-lovers choose pleather over leather because of their beliefs.
