Make Your Own Earrings

I love watching Project Runway and seeing how those designers create fabulous outfits out of nearly nothing. Their creativity and skills are impeccable.

Unfortunately, I am not one of those people who can sit down and make something out of nothing, but I’m learning how to make earrings!

It all started when I wanted to buy a pair of earrings and noticed the simplicity behind them, so I wanted to try to make my own pair.

Why make your own earrings?

These earrings are very simple and easy to make, but at the same time very pretty. I like to have many options when I’m dressing up, so making my own earrings lets me choose whatever color or style I want.

They also make a great and personal gift and a great hobby, if you’re in a need of one! The design is all up to you, your taste, your creativity and your choice. They are one of a kind and they are personal. It’s a great and creative hobby, which leaves you with some cool accessories.

What do you need to start making them?

I’m sure that the professionals use a lot of different tools, but if you wish to do this for fun and for your own use first and foremost, you don’t need more that these tools:

• Round Nose Pliers
• Side Cutters

When it comes to materials you’ll need to have some:

• Headpins
• Fish Hook Earwire
• Spacer beads – these come in so many shapes and sizes
• Different Beads – you can even buy Swarovski’s crystal beads fairly cheap

The quality of the earrings

There are of course as with anything different quality standards when it comes to DIY earrings. All the materials can be bought in sterling silver and gold or just gold or silver plated, which are of course a bit cheaper.

To start with, I chose the cheaper materials as I didn’t know if it was something that I would enjoy doing, but it is and the passion for DIY earrings is growing!

My earrings

They look very simple and I like them that way. I don’t wear a lot of earrings – they tend to change the shape of my face, I feel, but these small earrings are really a nice detail. Something that can change the whole look, even though they are small and simple.

So if you’re up to it, you can use an hour or two on Sundays and make yourself or someone else some nice earrings!
