New Trend Alert: Maxi Dresses

The spring is here and we’re slowly putting winter coats and warm sweaters away. What a joyful time! One of the biggest trends that we’ll see this season is the maxi-dress…..and there are many to choose from:

  • Plain jersey or cotton maxis
  • Flowers and graphic patterns
  • Light materials like silk and chiffon

Are maxi dresses only for tall girls?

That’s just a bad excuse. Maxi dresses are not only made for stick-thin, 6 feet models – we can all wear these wonderful, romantic dresses and look great. Just look at the beautiful Nicole Richie – she’s 5’1 and wears maxi-dresses very often, always looking great!

Two golden rules

  • If you’re tall: you can wear flat shoes with your maxi-dress without looking like a curtain walking around – you’ll look like a goddess!
  • If you’re short: you can definitely mix the maxi dress with some cool wedges or heels!

Wearing the dress

To some of us, dresses are something we stay away from other than if it’s a special occasion. I was one of those women for quiet some time. I felt too dressed up when I wore a dress, but after I tried wearing dresses and skirts for that matter, I found out that it was all in my head. Dresses can make us feel beautiful, feminine, sophisticated and sexy – there’s nothing to be afraid of!

How To Wear It During The Day

Nicole Richie is really loving the maxi-dresses. They go perfectly well with her bohemian style and she has been seen in maxi dresses every spring and summer for many years now.

  • The maxi dress can be too much during the day and too little during the night. That’s just how it is. To make it more suitable for day, wear it with a cool denim jacket.
  • Choose flower-prints for this spring/summer
  • Put a leather belt around your waist
  • Accessorize with a lot of colorful jewelry
  • Wear it with some cool, flat, gladiator sandals to make the look more edgy

I love this boho-looking dress. Wear it with some cool jewelry for a feminine feel and a denim jacket to mellow its dressy look down. I love how feminine and chic, but at the same time casual looking this outfit gets!

Night

When the night falls down and you’re getting ready for a party, a maxi dress is definitely a great choice this spring/summer.

  • Use accessories to make the long dress more sexy and dressed up. Big jewelry goes well with the maxi dress – in that way the dress won’t overpower the accessories.
  • Pair it up with a clutch in stead of a bag with straps to make the look more simple and clean.

Here are two night looks for your inspiration:

Sophisticated and Elegant

For the soft and elegant look, choose pale colors, which are very hot this year. This maxi dress from French Connection really goes well with darker hair, but I could totally see someone like Charlize Theron wearing it, so why wouldn’t every other blond either?

Edgy and Chic

This edgy and chic dress is suitable for someone who dares stand out. Its pattern is very distinctive and it is not hard to spot it in a crowd. Its jungle-like look is very summery and fresh and feels happy and fun. I could definitely see Sarah Jessica Parker in the role of Carrie Bradshaw wearing this maxi dress at a night out n NYC!

What’s your take on maxi-dresses? Will you be wearing them this spring/summer?

I hope you are right. Was just looking at several old (and beloved) summer dresses in my closet and contemplating revising the hem. Would be very happy not to do it!

Thanks.

Oh, absolutely! I love maxi dresses. Because I’m curvy, I have to give special attention to the cut and fabric, but when I find the right style, I find maxi dresses such an easy, fun, beautiful pick, especially in the warmer months!

I already have a maxi dress in my closet since last year, and I recently added another one I just purchased from Dorothy Perkins. When I tried it on I absolutely loved it, and since the weather had turned cold again and I wanted to wear it, I styled it as a spring/fall outfit instead of wearing it on its own with some sandals, as I would in summer. You can see that post here, if you want to check it out.

And I absolutely agree about dresses and skirts: I used to always wear pants, but then I found that the right dress, long or short, can be just as easy and comfortable! Now I’m all about dresses :-)

Also love maxi dresses! Already own 3.
The dress in the second night-outfit is so adorable! Definitely missing in my collection ;)

Haha, I also used think that dresses are not day-appropriate, but now I own more dresses than pants and wear them almost every day :)
