The greatest city in the world is not an understatement. If you haven’t been there, go! Not so much for the history…But for the energy. Coming from Europe and being used to historic monuments practically just outside your window, New York is not the vintage bargain like London or Paris or Rome… But New York has something else to offer that no historic monument I have seen has; a certain energy that is hard to explain, but merely uplifts you to great heights!
I didn’t have too many expectations going to New York. I simply knew it was going to be amazing seeing THE city, which I felt I knew from watching Sex and the City series about 5 times! But I was in for a huge surprise when it comes to New Yorkers… Good people. Very motivated, driven and ambitious, but helpful and happy. Needless to say, I loved the week in New York and I cannot wait to get back!
As for the style…
My expectations were very high. I expected runway pavements down Fifth Avenue. That I didn’t get. Street style in NYC is very simple and not as distinctive as in European capitals. As soon as I landed back in London, girls with crazy hair cuts, floral prints, biker boots, denim shorts and boyfriend blazers started showing up on my radar. In New York, the style is a lot more casual, yet elegant.
The Trench Coat
This classic piece of clothing is a favorite in New York. Strolling down Fifth Avenue and anywhere else in N.Y.C. it was easy to spot this fabulous item. It’s comfortable and casual, but at the same time extremely elegant!
The Boots
When I visited New York it was quite rainy. But that didn’t stop New Yorkers from looking fashionable. The women pulled out wellies in all sorts of colors and patterns! I saw quite a few Hunter boots, which are my personal favorite! Adding color to your rubber boots, makes the rainy day just a little bit more fun and New Yorkers did just that!
Remember a cute umbrella that fits into your handbag and a rain coat!
The Bags
New Yorkers have a great sense of bags! Across-body, oversized, back packs… You name the most fashionable handbags, New Yorkers are carrying them right now! In a big city like that and especially when it’s raining, an oversized bag is a must-have for all your stuff and New Yorkers know that!
The Natural Look of Beauty
Another thing that I noticed was the natural beauty of the women. Most women looked so fresh faced and had hardly any make-up on. That was very refreshing! A good mascara, a lip gloss and a blush seemed to be enough for New York-starlets!
The Colors
No matter what the temperature was or how rainy it was, New Yorkers chose a lot of colors in their outfits! Coming from cold Scandinavia, you do not see a lot of colors whether it’s summer or winter. I came from seeing mostly blacks, whites and greys to seeing all colors of the rainbow! So fun and inspiring!

Overall I really loved The US, New York, New Yorkers and the style!

I want to visit NYC!!!
The city is mandatory.
This is, like, the best blog on NYC-style: http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/
I still prefer, in comparison, Scandinavian fashion- elegant, laid-back.
They work simple colours!
That’s a great blog, yes! Scandinavian style is great, yes! (if I might say so living in Scandinavia!)
Thanks for the comment, Ally and hurry up and book a ticket to NYC!
I’m in NYC — I prefer black or brown or navy blue as one part of my wardrobe, but COLOR brightens the day. My daughter is a blonde — she can pull of the yellows and limes, I’m brunette so I go for the reds, pinks, turquoise and royal blue. Lots of colors!
We do look great in NYC! And we do love you here! Come back soon.
Thanks you so much, Susan! I can’t wait to get back to NY. I’m making it a mission :)
After becoming a mom and living in un-fashionable Switzerland for 7 years, I had lost my sense of self, so there went my sense of fashion, too.
Luckily I moved to New York and recovered both myself and my style – and I found new twists to add to my personal style that fit my personality and the current fashion.
I LOVE New York. I’m full-blooded Italian but I firmly believe New York is the world’s fashion capital. Now I’m back in Switzerland after 3 years in NY and I miss it so much!
Glad you had a lovely time. New York is one of those places that you either love or hate – though most people love it – there’s no way you can forget it or just think it was “blah” :-)
Thanks for sharing, Elisa! I cant imagine how it is being back in Switzerland, even though it’s one of the most beautiful European countries, after 3 years in New York. I had a hard time adjusting after I was there for a week!
