Sequins, Shapes and Shoulder Pads

If you love to flash colours, sequins or even shoulder pads now is the right time. The sci-fi future-inspired looks of the Balmain fall/winter 2009-2010 show inspired by Lady Gaga has started a new hot trend very quickly. But wait a minute… If you’re not Lady Gaga you probably want to take it down a notch! The best thing is to be inspired by the fit, colour and material and create our own Balmain-inspired look:

So what’s the trend all about?

  • Sequins and lots of them
  • Fitted dresses, blazers and mini skirts
  • Deep blue and black
  • Shoulder pads

Balmain is one of my favourite designers and the one that I can’t afford. The clothes are so pricey with jackets costing up to 12.500 dollars! That’s a year’s rent for me! Thankfully imagination and inspiration are free so I’ve found some items that can bring some Balmain into everyone’s wardrobe – most items under $50 and not too over the top!

You don’t want to be in sequins from head to toe – and the sequined items are to be worn separately if you are going for a less dramatic look.

How to include the sequins and shoulder pads in a day look?

SchoolSmall shoulder pads in fitted jackets are probably my favourite part of this trend. Your waist will automatically look smaller when your shoulders become wider and they just look so elegant and cool at the same time. I rarely wear flat shoes (due to the lack of height!), but I love these sequined sneakers from D&G! A couple of days ago I was in Copenhagen where I saw a girl reading New Moon, dressed in black, but with really shiny silver shoes and she looked so fashionable and different – so if you dare here’s a pair for you!

A night out as a rock n’ roll princess

So after a day of rocking silver shoes and the über-cool Union Jack laptop case, it’s time for a night out! I love mixing the unrefined items with soft items and making the look neither too rough or too girly. Pick ome opposites and see how they fit together, if you’re afraid of looking like a disco ball.

So you see… Balmain might be too expensive for most of us, but we can borrow some ideas and incorporate the trends into our wardrobe for a lot less! Remember, less is more, especially when it comes to sequins and shoulder pads!

I love Balmain. The whole collection is great. I’m wary of Shoulder pads, but I love the look on other people.

Thank you for your comment, Sherin! Yes, the collection is great. I love small shoulder pads – a more sci-fi than 90′s look!

Hey you gave your blog a different look and I love it!!!!

I'm totally in love with the deep blue and black dresses and the blue top with the ruffles; they are way cute! Now shoulders pads…eh… like Sharin, I'm a little cautious when it comes to shopping for blazers with shoulder pads. I think shoulder pads are a little masculinish, but blazers do look very professional and dressy too. I guess it just takes time to find the right one.

Yeah, it needed a change – I’m glad you like it!

Yeah, blazers with shoulder pads are a bit daring, but some of the really fitted blazers with small shoulder pads are really cute! Paired with some grey skinny jeans or jeggings and a pair of sexy ankle boots, they look awsome :)
